Mogul Films was founded in 1998 as Vision Filmworks in Los Angeles California. Vision Filmworks was funded entirely by its founder Darron Morris, who worked as a hospitality manager concurrently. The company’s first production was the feature, Sweating the Small Stuff, starring Kathleen Luong (Two Day in the Valley) and Darron Morris, with a cameo from Walter Jones (Mighty Morphine Power Rangers). Filmed in 16mm and in one week in January 1999, Sweating the Small Stuff was shot for one thousand dollars and filmed around Los Angeles (permit-free). Interiors were filmed in Darron’s Koreatown apartment, with Darron also providing craft services. The second production from the company was the DV short, Gifted. Gifted, shot in 2002 centered on a mentally challenged woman with supernatural abilities. Shot in one day in Los Angeles, Gifted was shot without a script and without dialogue. Vision Filmworks became Mogul Films in 2005, incorporated and moved to North Las Vegas in 2011. The first production under the new banner was the feature Human Waste in 2007. Shot in Los Angeles (Griffith Park, downtown LA, Hyatt Regency Los Angeles, Denny’s – all permit-free, of course). Human Waste was loosely based on the Tate-Labianca murders in LA in 1969. A talented cast of seven, including Joel Bryant (The Heartbreak Kid) shot their individual scenes in one day (two for Joel and Josetta Rose, whose first day’s takes were ruined by exterior noise). Sweating the Small Stuff, Gifted and Human Waste will be released on DVD as a filmmaker’s series, with commentary by Darron Morris. Mogul Films’ first major motion picture is Is It Love? Is it Love? is loosely based on the stage musical of the same name, written, choreographed and directed by Darron Morris while attending United States International University in San Diego. Filming is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2012, with a theatrical release before the end of the year. It had been announced that the company’s first major production would be The Starmaker, however, its production has been pushed back to 2013. |
